The family behind
“warm - no bag”.

Jerry's words.
Still the right idea.

Archive portrait of Jerry and Rose Jaques
Jerry and Rose Jaques.

Jerry and Rose Jaques built more than 300 homes in the area. In the mid 1960s, the family took over the Belknap Bar and Café, where Upper Lakes Foods developed the North Country Steak cut specifically for the Belknap.

The kids spent afternoons after school hauling beer from the warehouse to the bar. Jerry had a plain explanation for his low prices:

“warm - no bag”

No cooler, no bag, fewer frills. The price went down.

In 1979, the state razed the old building to make way for the new bridge. Nine months of retirement later, Jerry bought the Belknap Plaza Shopping Center and the bar and liquor store then known as Dominic's.

The family kept the store going. You can still put names to the people behind the counter.
